Whipped Iced Coffee

Whipped Iced Coffee

Published May 17, 2020

The famous TikTok Dalgona coffee trend has foodies sharing their whipped creations, both hot and iced.

It’s been on my to-do list to try this recipe, since it came out in March, and see if it is as good as all of the hype.

Last week, when I went to buy my ingredients for pineapple fried rice, I finally found a small container of instant coffee. So I’ve decided to test the viral whipped iced coffee recipe, with my own additional ingredient.

I never use instant coffee, so that was the only ingredient I had to purchase.

Can I use normal coffee if I don’t have instant coffee?

According to this article by Elite Daily, you can grind your normal coffee into a fine powder, if you don’t have instant coffee. I imagine if you have a mortar and pestle, that would work successfully.

I have yet to make whipped iced coffee with normal coffee. If you’ve tried it, leave a comment below and let me know what you think. I’d be curious to see if the flavor is better with normal coffee.

What milk can I use in whipped coffee?

I have not found any research limiting the types of milk you can use for a whipped iced coffee. Since the star of the drink is obviously the whipped coffee, as long as that has the correct consistency, you can dollop it onto any glass of milk.

I used whole milk (since I prefer the richness), though feel free to use almond, oat, or lactose-free milk.

At the end of the recipe, you will stir to incorporate the whipped coffee into the milk, so keep in mind that any flavored milk could change the final product. This may be a good thing if you don’t like bold / strong coffee.

This recipe took less than 10 minutes to prepare — as long as your water is boiled in advance. You could also save time by microwaving your water until it is boiling.

As I read from my fellow food bloggers, you want to use a large mixing bowl if you are using an electric beater to create the whipped coffee. At the beginning, your mixture will splatter and a smaller bowl will make a mess.

How long does it take to get whipped coffee?

As with other recipes that use a mixer, I started on a low speed, and gradually increased until I was on the highest setting.

Just like making meringue, your whipped coffee is done when you have stiff peaks. On my highest setting, it took less than 5 minutes. You will also see the color change from the dark espresso color to a rich golden brown.

If you are using a whisk and whipping the espresso by hand, I’ve read that it takes a while (some people claim 15-20 minutes), depending on how consistently you whisk.

The Final Product

Instant coffee has a distinct flavor, so that’s why I added cinnamon to my recipe, in an effort to add a better flavor than just the espresso. I also drink my coffee hot instead of iced (even in the summer), so this recipe was a step outside of my normal preferences.

As most Instagrammers have shared, the final product is luscious and attractive. I used one of our fancy crystal glasses for my final whipped iced coffee. I added a ton of ice cubes so it was really chilled.

The final product? Was actually delicious. I was hyped with the bold flavor. The cinnamon added a richness and depth of flavor.

At first I was worried about the amount of sugar in this recipe but you really need it. Of the negative reactions I’ve seen, I think it was because they’ve made whipped iced coffee without the sugar or flavor, so it turns out to be a grainy, bitter drink.

My whipped iced coffee was sweet enough to match my normal French vanilla coffee, but still bold and bitter with the espresso notes.

I recommend drinking/serving your whipped iced coffee with a straw. I stirred my drink for a while. The whipped coffee won’t incorporate 100% into the milk, so drinking through a straw is neater than trying to sip from the glass.

I drank my coffee throughout the afternoon. My whipped coffee stayed fluffy and chilled for more than an hour.

Recipe Score

I would give my whipped iced coffee recipe a 10/10 for the following:

  • Recipe Level

    • Easy: Make sure all of your ingredients are measured (especially the water). Use an electric mixer and beat for 5-minutes until fluffy. Serve in a pretty glass, hot or iced. Simple and beautiful. As long as you measure your water and whisk until fluffy, your whipped iced coffee will be a success.

  • Ingredients

    • Instant coffee is the only ingredient you may need to purchase. If you’d like to grind normal coffee into a powder, and try using that for whipped coffee, you may not have to run to the store at all. Save time when boiling water by microwaving your measured amount.

  • Prep

    • Besides boiling your water and purchasing your ingredients, there is no prep for this recipe.

  • Flavor

    • 10/10: Bold, cold, and fluffy. I can see why this recipe is a hit for food bloggers and coffee lovers. I loved the bitter espresso, hints of cinnamon, and cold milk.
